The Science of Comfort

Comfort is something most of us recognize immediately, but we seldom stop to consider what actually creates it. We know when a home feels inviting. The temperature is comfortable, humidity is well controlled, odors are minimal or pleasant and moving from room to room is seamless, without jarring differences in climate.

 

What this boils down to is control. The environment outside is beyond out control. Temperatures fluctuate, humidity rises and falls, pollen drifts through the air, and naturally occurring odors come and go. One of the greatest advantages of living indoors is the ability to control those conditions. 

 

Your home protects you from the elements during both winter and summer. As you walk through the door, the expectation is that the environmental factors that make you uncomfortable outdoors can be controlled and tailored to your family's preference's. But achieving that level of comfort involves much more than adjusting the thermostat. Temperature is only one piece of the puzzle.

 

Humidity Plays a Larger Role in Comfort Than We Realize

Let's talk about dew points and relative humidity for a moment. Have you ever noticed that 72 degrees doesn't always feel like 72 degrees? A home can be maintained at the exact same temperature year round, yet feel cool and comfortable on e day and warm and sticky the next. The difference is often the amount of humidity in the air.

 

Dew point is the temperature at which the air becomes saturated with water vapor and moisture in the air begins to condense into liquid. If the indoor air temperature is 72 degrees and the dew point is 50 degrees, any surface that cools to 50 degrees or below may begin to collect condensation. Surfaces that remain above 50 degrees will stay dry.

 

Relative humidity measures how close the air is to being saturated at it's current temperature, while dew point is a useful indicator of the amount of moisture in the air. Both are useful, but dew point often does a better job explaining why the same temperature can feel comfortable one day and muggy the next.

 

For the average homeowner the takeaway is simple. Controlling humidity is just as important as controlling temperature. Homes with properly managed humidity often feel cooler, fresher, and more comfortable even when the thermostat hasn't changed.

 

Why Air Movement Matters

Even if the temperature and humidity are well controlled within a building, the movement of air throughout the home also affects comfort. Two homes with similar temperature and humidity levels can feel remarkably different depending on how well air circulates from room to room. 

 

Proper air movement distributes conditioned air more evenly, reduces stagnant pockets where odors can linger, and allows your HVAC system to operate more effectively. When airflow is restricted or unbalanced, some rooms may feel stuffy, warmer, cooler, or less comfortable than others, even though the thermostat hasn't changed.

 

Airflow becomes restricted for several reasons. Closed interior doors, blocked supply or return vents, dirty HVAC filters, and furniture placed other registers can all interfere with proper air circulation. Addressing these issues helps conditioned air reach reach every part of the home, creating a more consistent and comfortable indoor environment.

 

Odors and Comfort

The comfort factor is pretty straightforward. Our sense of smell provides us with important information about the environment around us. The familiar odor of a damp basement, the scent of cleaning products, or a garbage can that needs attention all tell us something about what's happening inside our homes.
