We have helped Connecticut homeowners recover from hurricanes, ice storms, floods, and countless other weather events over the years. However the past few years have ushered in a new weather concern in the form of wildfire smoke, and the effect on our air quality during these events has been dramatic.

 

Until recently, hazy, smoke filled skies and air quality alerts were associated with other parts of the country, sometimes hundreds or even thousands of miles away - and certainly not in Connecticut. Over the past several summers, wildfire smoke has become an increasingly familiar part of life in New England, and while these events are temporary, they are also recurring, suggesting a pattern that homeowners will need to be prepared for in the years ahead.

 

While wildfire smoke in Connecticut. may seem surprising given how far away these fires are, the fact is many parts of North America are experiencing longer than usual wildfire seasons and more intense fires creating significantly more smoke than in the past. At the same time, weather patterns that steer our atmosphere have been aligned to transport those smoke plumes directly into the Northeast. 

 

The smallest particles in wildfire smoke, known as PM 2.5, are so light that they can remain suspended in the atmosphere for days, allowing them to cross multiple states, and across national borders. While we can't control the air outside, we can take meaningful steps to improve the air inside—helping our homes continue to do what they've always been meant to do: protect the families living inside them. Whether these smoky days occur once or several times each summer, they serve as a reminder that the air outside our homes isn’t always as clean as we’d like it to be, making it even more important to ensure the air you're returning to is as healthy as possible.

 

What Happens When We Breathe Wildfire Smoke

 

Every breath we take passes through a remarkable natural filtration system designed to protect our lungs from many of the airborne particles we encounter each day. The tiny hairs inside our nose, along with the mucus lining in our airways, are designed to trap larger dust particles, pollen, and other airborne contaminants before they reach our lungs. 

 

Wildfire smoke presents a unique challenge because many of its particles are extraordinarily small. The primary concern is fine particulate matter known as PM2.5 which measures just 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter. These particles are so small that many can bypass the body's natural filtering mechanisms and travel deep into your lungs reaching the tiny sacs called alveoli where oxygen is exchanged between the lungs and the bloodstream. 

 

Once the particles reach these sacks, the body recognizes them as foreign contaminants and responds by triggering an inflammation.This inflammatory response is meant to protect us, but it can also irritate the delicate tissues of the respiratory system making even healthy individuals experience symptoms like coughing, watery eyes, headaches, or wheezing and shortness of breath.

 

For the young and elderly, wildfire smoke and the PM2.5 that comes along with it becomes particularly dangerous. Children are especially vulnerable because their lungs are still developing, and older adults often have reduced lung function and are more likely to have underlying respiratory or cardiovascular conditions.

 

Individuals with existing respiratory illnesses like asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), heart disease, or other chronic health conditions may experience worse symptoms when wildfire smoke is present, making it especially important to reduce their exposure whenever possible.

To put it simply, as warm air naturally rises, it escapes through small openings in the upper portions of your home like the attic. This process happens every day whether we realize it or not. In the winter, it contributes to heat loss as cold air enters the home, and in the summer months it pulls warm moist air inside along with any contaminants it carries with it. The rim joist is located at the top of your foundation wall where the wood framing of your living space meets the basement below. While this may seem like a minor component of the structure, the rim joist is often one of the leakiest parts of a home. Over time small gaps develop around framing, plumbing penetrations, electrical wiring, and where different building materials meet. Individually these openings may seem insignificant, but together they can allow a surprising amount of outside air to enter.

The important takeaway here is understanding that our homes are not air tight. Air is constantly moving in and out of our homes, carrying with it heat, humidity, odors, and airborne particles. During a wildfire smoke event, that same air movement can introduce smoke and PM2.5 into the living space.

 

While we can’t eliminate this process entirely, understanding how it works allows us to take practical steps to deduce the amount of polluted outdoor air entering our homes. Many homeowners assume that simply closing their windows will keep wildfire smoke outside. While that certainly helps, every home still needs to exchange air with the outdoors. Small cracks in the building envelope, exhaust fans, dryer vents, and normal pressure changes all allow outside air to find its way inside. The goal isn’t to eliminate that air movement, it’s to better control it.

Although we can't control the air outside, there are several practical steps homeowners can take to reduce their exposure to PM2.5 and other airborne contaminants indoors. Our homes should serve as a refuge when outdoor air quality declines. While no home can completely prevent wildfire smoke from entering, a combination of proper air sealing, effective filtration, and regular maintenance can significantly reduce the amount of smoke and fine particulate matter that makes its way into the living space.

 

Rim Sealing

 

One of the most effective ways to reduce the amount of wildfire smoke entering your home is by limiting uncontrolled air leakage. While no home is completely air tight, sealing gaps and cracks around the building envelope reduces the pathways through which outdoor air can enter.

 

Areas such as rim joists, attic penetrations, window and door openings and mechanical openings all contribute to the natural exchange of air between your home and the outdoors. During periods of poor air quality reducing these leaks helps limit the amount of smoke and PM2.5 that can infiltrate the living space.

The type of filter, its efficiency, and how often they are changed all influence how well it can capture airborne contaminants. Homeowners should always follow their HVAC manufacturer’s recommendation when selecting a replacement filter as a filter that is too restrictive can reduce system performance.
